Testing certificates with the browser and the mail application

February 6th, 2006

I have been testing how to use a digital certificate with the Nokia 770. First of all, go and get a free digital certificate. After creating a client certificate, download and import it using the Certificate Manager in the Control Panel:

Certificate manager

Set the Trust options to everything, so you will be able to use the certificate both with the browser and the e-mail application.

I first tested the browser, and I could not identify with the certificate. I only obtained a Unable to complete secure transaction:

Certificate manager

I tested the same certificate with Mozilla Firefox in GNU/Linux, and it worked without problems; so it seems the browser can not work properly with user certificates.

Then I tried the e-mail application. I created a new message, and set up the Digitally sign option:

Certificate manager

When sending the message, a pop up appears and asks you for the certificate password:

Certificate manager

Then I checked that the message can be correctly read when downloaded using the same e-mail application:

Certificate manager

So the conclusions are clear. Certificates are not properly supported in the web browser (it is a known and reported bug), and correctly supported in the e-mail application.

I managed to import a certificate for Eap-TLS wlan connection, but get “NONE” as the option in the certificate list when trying to connect.
It seems the wlan app doesnt work properly with certificates. I cant get our 802.1x network to work at all, even though i have all the right certificates.

Have you reported that bug? If no, please report it. It is the only way to get it working as it should.

Have this been reported or not yet? Or has this been fixed by now?
I have the same difficulties, I keep getting NONE when prompted to select a certificate.

If you are getting the error, and nobody has reported it yet, you should report it. Use the Bugzilla of maemo for reporting the bug.

I am having the same problems with the USA Verizon DSL online site and Verizon Yahoo email. I noticed on the Opera forums that there is an Opera download that fixes this problem but apparently you can’t update the 770 browser. I always get when I try to sign in to Verizon online “unable to complete secure transaction” and “SMTP operation failed” when I try to send an email. Does the Mozilla browser work with the 770?

There is a port in progress. It is called “Minimo”. You can test it, following these instructions. I have not tested by myself though, and at this moment I don’t thin it can be an alternative to the builtin Opera browser.
